The Best Of Jack Cole
(Ref: BOJC)

The Best Of Jack Cole
Illustrated by Jack Cole, published & edited by Greg Theakston. Pure Imagination Publishing, 2006. The Best Of Jack Cole (1914-1958) features 160 pages of comic strip art from this lunatic genius. It takes in several early strips from such obscure titles as Star Rangers Funnies, Keen Detective Funnies, Smash Comics & National Comics. These date from 1938 through 1942.

His long association with Quality Comics, where he created & drew Plastic Man is represented by several minor strips, plus the immortal Plas, himself. The minor strips include Burp The Twerp, Dogtag & Death Patrol, which appeared in Police, Smash & Military Comics. The final segment includes some crime & horror stories from T-Man, Ken Shannon & Web Of Evil.

These are among the last comics strips that Cole drew, before working as a gag cartoonist for Playboy & others, until his untimely death in 1958. Publisher Theakston muses over the term genius in his introduction, where he links Cole to Kirby, Ditko, Alex Toth & Basil Wolverton. Jack Cole deserves this lofty praise, his legacy is testimony to that. 160 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 8" x 11" (203mm x 279mm) ISBN: 1566850320 Highly Recommended.

Jack Cole and Plastic Man
Art Spiegelman and Chip Kidd. DC Comics, 2001. For years Jack Cole laboured dutifully as a cartoonist, comic book illustrator, and Playboy's premier artist. He was, on the outside, a mild-mannered and easygoing guy. But one look at his most famous creation- the manic, surreal Plastic Man- and there is no question that much more lurked in the mind of this tragic artist than anyone suspected. Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and cartoonist Art Spiegelman and renown graphic designer Chip Kidd pay homage to Plastic Man and his creator, Jack Cole. With exuberant energy, extraordinary flexibility, and bizarre plot twists, Jack Cole stretched Plastic Man beyond the traditional limits of the comic book form. 144 pages.
