Illustration, issue 16 Summer 2008
(Ref: ILLUSTRATION16)

Illustration, issue 16 Summer 2008
Edited by Ruth Prickett. Guineapiguana Publications, Summer 2008. The advent and development of photography has often been heralded as a threat to the continued use of illustration in newspapers and advertising, yet the reports of illustration's death seem to be much exaggerated. For example, while the work of the artists who recorded the events of war in the first half of the 20th century is enthusiastically collected and used by modern historians, who would have predicted that illustrators would still have a role to play in documenting 21st-century conflicts?

This issue looks at the past 100 years of illustrators at war. We start with the famous and less well-known names who brought home events at the front in the first world war. We then find out about Edward Bawden's first-hand experiences of life with the Marsh Arabs of Iraq at the end of the second world war, while he served as an official war artist.

Then we fast-forward to the 21st century and hear from a modern war artist who has worked with Canadian and US soldiers in recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. He tells us what illustration can still offer that photography cannot and why it remains an important method of recording major historical events.

Back on home turf, we talk to Christopher Wormell about his widely varied work that encompasses everything from wood-engravings of idyllic rural scenes to bold linocuts of animals and watercolour images for his own children's books.

We then travel to Chennai to explore the work of Tara Publishing, which is using illustration to give new life and a fresh audience to traditional Indian art forms. Back then to Italy to examine a remarkable collection of European periodicals and publisher's archives as well as the extravagant deluxe creations of an Italian fine press. 52 pages. Soft Cover Full Colour 8" x 12" (203mm x 305mm) Recommended.

The Prince Valiant Page (Deluxe) (Signed) (Limited Edition)
(Ref: PVPLTD)

The Prince Valiant Page (Deluxe) (Signed) (Limited Edition)
Gary Gianni, foreword by Mike Mignola, introduction by Robert Wagner.. Flesk Publications, 2008. This is the first book collecting Gary Gianni's work on Prince Valiant. This book gives a well-rounded informative look at both Gianni's rendition of the Prince Valiant Sunday strip and his own working procedures. After 25 years as a professional illustrator, Gianni describes his new role as an assistant to John Cullen Murphy (who assisted Hal Foster--Prince Valiant's creator). Upon Murphy's retirement, Gianni became the third artist in the 70-year history of the feature.

It continues with in-depth knowledge of the strip's creative process (i.e., receiving the script, photographing models, making preliminary drawings and pencil roughs, then concluding with the finished illustrations). Supporting artwork includes collaborations between Murphy and Gianni, whose entertaining, insightful text reveals his methods and working relationships with Murphy and current Prince Valiant writer, Mark Schultz.

Most reproductions are direct from the original artwork, rendered with archival quality, and displayed in museum catalogue format. Gianni's originals are delineated using brush and pen to create tones and variations often lost in the pure black and white reproduction methods characteristically employed in newspapers and comics. Gianni's work has never been reproduced in this manner before. This book includes three gatefolds of Prince Valiant strips in colour to showcase the finished works. 112 pages. Steve Rude & John Fleskes. Flesk Publications, 2008. For over two decades, Steve Rude has galvanized the art world as a comic magazine artist and illustrator. This book explores Rude's versatility in several subjects and mediums. Chapters cover his comics and illustration work, private commissions, animation material, life-drawings, and an elaborate sketchbook section.

Artist in Motion shows Rude's artistic processes in their entirety and will serve as both an art book and an inspirational guide for aspiring students. The Complete Little Orphan Annie Volume One: 1924-27 Will Tomorrow Ever Come?
(Ref: CLOA1)

The Complete Little Orphan Annie Volume One: 1924-27 Will Tomorrow Ever Come?
Harold Gray, Jeet Heer (commentary). IDW Publishing, 2008. When Oliver Warbucks first sees a strange little mop-headed girl in his mansion, he exclaims: "What th — Say - whose kid are you?" "I'm nobody's kid, Mr. Warbucks," she sheepishly replies. "I'm just an orphan Mrs. Warbucks took on trial."

So begins one of the most endearing, enduring relationships in the history of American comic strips—the relationship between Little Orphan Annie and "Daddy" Warbucks.

This sequence, which hasn't seen print since its initial 1924 newspaper appearance, is among the many treasures to be found in "Will Tomorrow Ever Come.

The Complete Little Orphan Annie is the second series to be released under IDW's The Library of American Comics imprint, edited and designed by Dean Mullaney.

Dick Tracy, Terry & the Pirates and Little Orphan Annie were the crown jewels of the world famous New York News-Chicago Tribune comics section.

Volume One contains more than 1,000 daily comics in nine complete stories, from the very first strip in August 1924 through October 1927.

In the pages of "Will Tomorrow Ever Come?" readers will discover how Annie escapes the orphanage and is ultimately adopted by "Daddy;" how she finds that loveable mutt Sandy and rescues him from being tortured; how she meets the Silos, who become recurring characters throughout the series; how she joins the circus and first encounters Pee Wee the elephant; and how, broke and alone, she hits the road on a succession of dangerous yet spiritually uplifting adventures.

"Harold Gray's Little Orphan Annie is one of the great American comic strips," adds comics historian Jeet Heer, who is writing an extensive Harold Gray biographical essay that will run continuously through the series. "With Dickensian imagination and gusto, Gray put his spunky orphan through a world of trouble. We should all be glad to see Annie again in her truest incarnation." The text will be illustrated with rare photographs and background material.

Since its premiere in August 1924, Little Orphan Annie has become a cultural icon—in both her red-headed, blank-eyed appearance, and as the embodiment of American individuality and self-reliance. The serious tone running throughout "Will Tomorrow Ever Come?" will broaden and enrich the character for those readers who know Little Orphan Annie only from the Broadway musical and subsequent film treatments.

Harold Gray was born in 1894 in Kankee, Illinois, and began his cartooning career as an assistant to Sydney Smith, creator of the famously successful strip, The Gumps. Gray wrote and illustrated Little Orphan Annie from 1924 until his death in 1968. 386 pages. Hard Cover Black & White 11" x 8½" (279mm x 215mm) (ISBN-13: 9781600101403)

The Riot at Bucksnort and Other Western Tales
(Ref: RAB)

The Riot at Bucksnort and Other Western Tales
Robert E. Howard. Bison Books, 2005. Robert E. Howard turned to writing comic and dialect Western tales only late in his career, but he found an immediate and continuously successful market for them, and they are in many respects his most accomplished and polished works.

The sixteen tales collected here are some of the best of his stories, featuring Breckinridge Elkins, Pike Bearfield, and Buckner J. Grimes—three inimitable characters who lead well-intentioned lives of perpetual confusion, mischance, and outright catastrophe. Fifteen of the stories were published between 1934 and 1937 in Action Stories, Argosy, or Cowboy Stories; the other remained unpublished for more than thirty years.

Many of these stories were rewritten for book publication and have never been reprinted in their original form. They are reminiscent of traditional southwestern tall tales, told in dialect, featuring larger-than-life characters, swift action, broad satire, and wry humor. 256 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 5" x 8" (127mm x 203mm) (ISBN-13: 9780803273542)

Dreams and Other Stories (Ehé-Catl #4)
(Ref: DAOS)

Dreams and Other Stories (Ehé-Catl #4)
Winsor McCay. Real Free Press, 1976. Out of Print. A wonderful collection of strips and illustrations from comic's pioneer Winsor McCay. As the editorial in this issues says, “Before Surrealism, before Dada, there was Winsor McCay.” Considered by many to be the first true comic strip artist, McCay was clearly influenced by the Art Nouveau movement. He created the first successful animated cartoon with Gertie the Dinosaur (around 1909 to 1913 depending on who you believe).

It's difficult to comprehend now, but while already tremendously successful with Little Nemo he simultaneously produced his other masterpiece, Dreams of the Rarebit Fiend under the alias “Silas”. He once commented on his success by saying “I never thought about the money I would receive for my drawings. I simply drew and drew.” This collection highlights this attitude.

There are several political cartoons that show a very sharp sense of humour as well as many examples of his whimsy with Rarebit Fiend, Little Nemo, Little Sammy Sneeze, Hungry Henrietta and others. 48 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 8½" x 11½" (215mm x 291mm)

In the Shadow of No Towers
(Ref: ITSONT)

In the Shadow of No Towers
Art Spiegelman. Penguin / Viking, 2004. Cartoonist Spiegelman presents a highly personalized, political, and confessional diary of his experience of September 11 and its aftermath. In 10 large-scale pages of original, hard hitting material (composed from September 11, 2001 to August 31, 2003), two essays, and 10 old comic strip reproductions from the early 20th century, he expresses his feelings of dislocation, grief, anxiety, and outrage over the horror of the attacks -- and the subsequent 'hijacking' of the event by the Bush administration to serve what he believes is a misguided and immoral political agenda. Readers who agree with Spiegelman's point of view will marvel at the brilliance of his images and the wit and accuracy of his commentary. Others, no doubt, will be jolted by his candor and, perhaps, be challenged to reexamine their position. 38 pages. Hard Cover Full Colour 10" x 14" (25cm x 36cm) ISBN: 0670915416
