A Pictorial History Of Horror Stories: Two Hundred Years Of Illustrations From The Pulp Magazines
Peter Haining. Treasure Press, 1985. First Edition. Very Fine. From renowned author Peter Haining a fascinating compendium of illustrations from the pulp magazines that proliferated from the 1920s. Haining avoids the painted covers & seeks out numerous examples from their interiors. He plots the pulp's story from the Penny-dreadfuls, via the legendary Weird Tales, to their demise in the 1950s & their successors in the illustrated horror magazines. Haining also discusses such classic writers as Robert Bloch, Robert E. Howard & Ray Bradbury. As expected, this edition is handsomely illustrated with each image having full credits to their original publication, illustrator & informative details. There are several full colour plates provided too. A Pictorial History Of Horror Stories is a very welcome addition to the discussion of these latterly neglected pulp classics. A first print with its original dust wrapper, price unclipped, in collectable condition. It reprints in full, the earlier, Terror! A History Of Horror Illustrations From The Pulp Magazines. Book is 1st print, minor spine bumps noted, VF. 176 pages. Soft Cover Part Colour 9" x 11" (23cm x 28cm) ISBN: 1850510598

Sleazy Business: A Pictoral History Of Exploitation Tabloids 1959-1974
Alan Betrock. Shake Books, 1996. Everyone's seen the National Enquirer - but did you know that the Enquirer's roots are in sex, gore, and sensationalism? In addition, did you know that during the sixties and early seventies, some forty other tabloids battled for circulation each week in a war that led to sensationalistic excesses never seen before or since? Sleazy Business is the pictorial history of these publications that represent the underbelly of the sensational sixties, twisting the news in everything from politics to celebrities, the sexual revolution, hippies, gore and violence, humour, personals, and of course, plenty of sex. Never before has any book gathered together such a wide array of exploitation tabloids, and even though they may be gone from the now P.C. newsstands, they remain an important part of America's mass-media history, and a previously untold story in the long history of exploitation journalism. 130 pages. Steranko: Graphic Narrative
Illustrated by Jim Steranko, introduction & narration by Philip Fry & Ted Poulos. Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1978. First Edition. Out of Print. Very Fine. We offer here a very unusual catalogue featuring the B&W illustration of modern master Jim Steranko, created for an exhibition given at The Winnipeg Art Gallery, during 1977. After an introduction, we are given over to a narration by authors and exhibition curators Philip Fry & Ted Poulos. They present a detailed thesis about Jim Steranko's astonishing artistry, which is highlighted by numerous examples of his Comic book art, much of it coming from Marvel Comics, where he produced many fine strips.

These include Captain America, Tower Of Shadows & The Avengers. It is for his Nick Fury stories, in his own title & on Strange Tales that Steranko is probably best known. After assisting the mighty Jack 'King' Kirby, he eventually took over the strip & made the character his own. The majority of illustrations are from Fury & they show Steranko's art in full flow.
