Monkey Subdues the White-Bone Demon Translator Wang Hsing-pei, art Chao Hung-pen and Chien Hsiao-tai. Dust Jacket drawn by Joost Swarte. Real Free Press, 1971. Out of Print. The travels of the Chinese Monk Hsuang Tsang - aided and abetted by Monkey, Pigsy and Sandy - have been popular in China since the 7th Century A.D. Of course they inspired the famous cult TV programme during the 1970s.
In 1971 Amsterdam's Real Free Press decided to celebrate its fifth birthday by publishing a bi-lingual Dutch-English edition of this work which was drawn by the two Chinese artists Chao Hung-pen and Chien Hsiao-tai to commemorate the 1,300 anniversary of the death of the man who brought Buddhist philosophy to China.
This edition features their wonderful intricate line work presented as a single panel per page with the text running at the bottom like a children's storybook. The dust jacket is drawn in traditional style by the great Joost Swarte. 110 pages. Soft Cover Black & White 7" x 10" (172mm x 245mm) Dust Jacket
